At a ramen stall near Shimogamo Shrine, the protagonist encounters Higuchi, who introduces himself as Kamotaketsunuminokami and then Kamotaketsunominokamo, claiming to be a matchmaking deity. He predicts that Akashi will be tied to either the protagonist or Ozu. Having joined a tennis circle dominated by couples as a college freshman, the protagonist laments his single status. Encouraged by Ozu, he dedicates his next two years to disrupting the romantic connections of his peers. Although he develops feelings for Akashi and promised to take her to the shrine's ramen stall, the matchmaking god prompts him to approach her during the O-bon festival. Despite this intervention, he ultimately fails to speak with her.
