The semi-finals of the Duelist Kingdom tournament begin with a duel between Yuugi and Mai. Having witnessed the extreme measures Yami Yuugi took during his battle with Kaiba, Yuugi becomes terrified of his other self. This fear causes him to focus excessively on controlling Yami rather than playing the game, leading to several significant mistakes. Yuugi is forced to confront his past trauma and learn to trust his partner again. He must overcome these internal conflicts and correct his errors to defeat Mai and secure his place in the tournament finals.
