Ep. 1: Natsume and Nyanko-sensei pursue a black cat that steals the Book of Friends from their home.

While retrieving a ball at school, Natsume is attacked by a youkai and accidentally breaks a seal while fleeing. That night, a black lookalike of Nyanko-sensei appears and steals the Book of Friends. As Natsume and Nyanko-sensei search for the thief, they encounter a gathering of youkai planning to attack humans for sealing their lord, who is the black cat. With Nyanko-sensei's assistance, Natsume returns the lord's name. This act allows him to witness the lord's fond and bittersweet memories of living among humans, resolving the conflict through understanding rather than violence.
