Kousaka experiences panic attacks triggered by trains, causing physical and mental distress. He conceals his condition from others. After accidentally approaching a station and beginning an episode, a stranger inquires about his well-being, which he dismisses, relieved it isn’t someone he knows. As a new academic term begins, Kousaka and a coworker welcome incoming graduate students to their field of study. One of the new arrivals proves to be unexpectedly significant.
