Un chico llamado Satoshi inicia un viaje para convertirse en un Maestro Pokémon junto a su compañero Pikachu. Lo acompañan Takeshi, un entrenador especializado en Pokémon tipo Roca y que suele estar distraído con las chicas, y Kasumi, una entrenadora de Pokémon tipo Agua que quizás sienta algo por él. Recorren varias regiones, como Kanto, las Islas Cítricas y Johto, y participan en retos de la Liga Pokémon. Durante su aventura, con frecuencia se cruzan con Musashi, Kojirou y Nyarth, miembros del grupo criminal Team Rocket, quienes intentan robar Pokémon, pero siempre son detenidos por Satoshi y su equipo.
