Ayako

Set in post-World War II Japan, the story spans nearly 25 years following the country's defeat and occupation by Allied forces. In 1949, Japan is undergoing significant transformation, particularly in agriculture, where land reforms are breaking up large estates and redistributing them to tenant farmers. This shift threatens the Tenge family, a conservative landowning household. The family patriarch, Sakuemon, faces personal turmoil as one son returns from a prisoner-of-war camp, and another is suspected of associating with communists. Amid these challenges, Sakuemon finds comfort in his youngest family member, Ayako, who holds a special place in his life as both daughter and granddaughter.
