Haikara-san ga Tooru

A 17-year-old girl in Tokyo during the Taisho era, Benio Hanamura was raised by her father after losing her mother at a young age. Her father is a high-ranking Japanese army official. Benio’s upbringing has led her to adopt a tomboyish nature, which defies traditional Japanese expectations of femininity. She practices kendo, drinks sake, and wears Western-style clothing that often appears unconventional. She shows little interest in domestic responsibilities and prefers literature. Benio opposes arranged marriages and supports women’s rights to pursue careers and choose their own partners. Her close friends include Tamaki, a more conventionally feminine woman who shares her views on women's rights, and Ranmaru, a young man raised to perform female roles in kabuki theater, which has influenced his effeminate behavior.
