Sara gazes at the attic of the house next door, hoping to see one of the children, before feeding the sparrows and beginning her workday. On her Covent Garden shopping trip she realizes that Thomas's health is starting to deteriorate and even if there are playmates next door, the Headmistress probably would not allow her to play outside. Becky returns early to the Seminary, and the Headmistress says that she will deduct the cost of Becky's food from her salary.
