Prior to entering the Seireitei, Ganju discloses that his animosity toward Soul Reapers stems from one killing his brother. Inside the district, Squad Eleven captain Kenpachi Zaraki begins hunting Ichigo, viewing him as a worthy adversary. Simultaneously, Squad Five captain Sousuke Aizen confronts Ichimaru before Squad Ten captain Toushirou Hitsugaya regarding his inadequate excuse for letting the intruders escape, leading Hitsugaya to suspect Ichimaru is plotting something. As the group traverses the shield surrounding the Seireitei, Ichigo fails to control his spiritual energy, causing the shell to explode and separate the companions.
