Rukia recalls her time in the thirteenth division, where she faced prejudice from peers despite her Kuchiki clan heritage. She formed a close bond with lieutenant Kaien Shiba, but their relationship ended in tragedy when a hollow merged with Kaien and attacked Rukia. In the ensuing struggle, Kaien regained control of his body and impaled himself on Rukia's zanpakutou to stop the hollow. Consumed by guilt, Rukia views herself as a coward responsible for Kaien's death and believes she deserves execution. This reflection occurs during the Soul Society: The Rescue arc, specifically episode 8 out of 22.
