A fourth-grade boy named Taira Kappeita, who had lost his mother at a young age, often masked his loneliness with a tough exterior around his father. One day, his father brought home discarded parts from work and built a go-kart. They tested it at a race track, but the kart had a bent frame and struggled to move straight. Despite these issues, Kappeita skillfully handled the kart and eventually caught up to a fast-moving competitor. The driver of that kart was Minamoto Naomoi, a champion in the East Japan Junior Cart racing. Observing the race, Naomoi’s mother, Minamoto Nanako, suggested that Kappeita join an official competition.
