Law enforcement officials consult with L regarding the Kira case. L deduces that the killer is likely a student with a simplistic view of justice after analyzing victim death times. He asks for publicity data and suspects Kira accesses police secrets. Soichiro Yagami leads the investigation, allowing his son Light to track authorities since Soichiro is Light's father. Ryuk informs Light he is being followed and explains shinigami mechanics, including how they gain lifespans and see names above heads. Ryuk offers Light the chance to exchange half his remaining life for shinigami eyes, similar to Ryuk's own abilities.
