Oct 4, 2006Light Yagami discovers a notebook outside his high school that claims to kill anyone whose name and face are known. He initially dismisses the Death Note as a hoax but confirms its reality after testing it. The original owner, a shinigami named Ryuk, approaches Light to explain that the notebook now belongs to him. As the new owner, Light is the only one who can see and interact with Ryuk. Ryuk also warns that he will write Light's name in his book when Light's time to die arrives. Motivated by these events, Light decides to use the Death Note's power to rid the world of evil and become the God of a new, peaceful world.
EP 2Interpol seeks top detective L to identify the mass murderer known as Kira.
Oct 11, 2006Interpol convenes to address a surge of inexplicable heart attacks among criminals. Unable to solve the mystery, they contact L, the world's top-ranked detective, who maintains his true identity as a secret. Communicating via computer and electronic voice, L informs them that the deaths are mass murders and that he will soon confront the killer, referred to by the public as Kira. This announcement angers Light, who has worked hard to keep the Death Note hidden, especially since Ryuk now becomes visible to anyone who touches the book. L subsequently tricks Light into revealing that Kira resides in Japan's Kanto region through a fabricated television broadcast. Realizing he has been outmaneuvered, a humiliated Light vows to eliminate L.

Utilizing this insight, Light devises a strategy to expose his pursuer. He forces a drug dealer to touch the notebook, causing the man to hijack a bus before dying. During the chaos, Light activates his tracker, which reveals that the person following him is Raye Penber, a Federal Agent from the United States working for L and Watari.

He follows Raye onto a train and forces him to write down the names of his fellow agents on a piece of the Death Note by threatening Raye's family. Because of the simultaneous death of these twelve FBI agents in Japan, the police are scared to continue investigating, and the American President pulls the FBI off the Kira case; however, Penber's fiancée, a former FBI agent, seeks to find Kira for revenge. Light has another criminal leave a third coded note for L which finishes the phrase "L, do you know? Gods of Death love apples." Although there is truth to this, L determines that Kira is only mocking him as he considers his next move.

She goes on a date with him and secures proof that he is the criminal L is hunting. Her effortless deduction of Kira’s identity raises L’s suspicion, as he was unable to reach the same conclusion himself.
