Mikami's Death Note fails to work, prompting Near to confess he knew about the fake notebook and tampered with the real one. As Mikami is restrained, Light breaks down, laughs maniacally, and confesses he is Kira. He attempts to write names on a piece of the Death Note hidden in his watch, but Matsuda shoots him to stop him. Seeing Light writhe in agony, Mikami commits suicide. Light escapes wounded amidst the commotion and reflects on past events through flashbacks. True to his promise, Ryuk writes down Light's name, finding the experience entertaining. Misa stands atop a skyscraper while Light dies of cardiac arrest on a set of stairs, seeing L's figure before him.
