During a F-Zero race, Rick Wheeler's Dragon Bird suffers from Zoda's Reactor Might interference, allowing Jack Levin to take the lead. After a night of partying, Rick and Captain Falcon discover the race grid is filled with Blood Hawk clones piloted by Blood Falcons. The imposter fleet attacks the real racers, and Black Shadow uses a portal to trap Rick, Falcon, and the clones in Dark Space. There, Rick confronts an illusion of Jack controlled by Zoda, who refuses to shoot his friend. Zoda then merges with his ship, becoming Hyper Zoda, and forces Rick and Falcon to combine their Boost Fires to escape. They return to the track, where Zoda is celebrated by the crowd, revealing Black Shadow's plan to free him from his cosmic prison.
