Ten years after a Servant duel destroyed Fuyuki City, Shirō Emiya, the sole survivor, lives by his adoptive father Kiritsugu's ideal of becoming a hero of justice. He uses magical powers to help others but worries about rising crime and gas leaks. Shirō resides with guardian Taiga Fujimura and receives help from classmate Sakura Matō, who secretly loves him. While visiting the fire ruins, Shirō recalls Kiritsugu's warning that saving one life costs another. He meets a silver-haired girl who urges him to summon a Servant before disappearing. Simultaneously, Rin Tōsaka summons an Archer-class Servant to prepare for the Fifth Holy Grail War, beginning her hunt for other magi and their Servants.
