Nine-year-old Melmo is left to care for her two younger brothers after her mother dies in a car accident. During this difficult time, her mother's ghost appears and gives her a bottle of special candy. The candy allows Melmo to transform into an adult or an infant, or combine both forms to become a fetus or any animal she envisions. Using these candies, she tackles the challenges she faces. Her younger brother Toto and her grumpy mentor, Dr. Nosehairs, assist her, with Toto once unintentionally turning into a frog.
