Former imperial favorite Susanna von Benemünde seeks to eliminate Annerose and regain the Emperor's affection. She collaborates with Flegel, who anticipates that a scandal involving Annerose will cause Reinhard's political demise. Annerose is kidnapped with the intent that she be murdered and discovered with a lower-class lover. However, she is successfully rescued by Kircheis, Reuenthal, Mittermeyer, and Oberstein. Consequently, Benemünde is compelled to take her own life. Although Flegel has carefully destroyed all evidence linking him to the conspiracy, both Oberstein and Reinhard remain suspicious of his involvement in the failed plot.
