Siegfried Kircheis returns to his hometown to visit parents he has not seen for eight years since joining the military. He reminisces about his childhood and unexpectedly meets an old acquaintance. Meanwhile, Kaiser Friedrich IV reveals his plan to bestow a countship upon Reinhard von Müsel on his twentieth birthday to Richard von Grimmelshausen, who concurs. News spreads rapidly through the Imperial Court, reaching Reinhard, who enthusiastically anticipates the honor. This reaction contrasts sharply with the outrage and hostility shown by the high nobles toward the Kaiser's plan. Additionally, another rumor emerges within the Imperial Court concerning the background of Hermann von Lüneburg.
