Ep. 1: Yuuichi helps Rika climb Mount Houdai to overcome her fear of death

Nurse Akiko stops Yuuichi from sneaking out by barricading his door, offering to lift the restriction if he befriends a new patient. This patient is Rika, a seventeen-year-old in the eastern ward who admires Ryuunosuke Akutagawa. Yuuichi initially lies about reading her favorite author, but she sees through the deception and demands favors in exchange for forgiveness. Rika asks to visit Mount Houdai, the site where her father died, hoping to conquer her fear of mortality. Yuuichi successfully smuggles her out of the hospital. He begins helping her not because of her demands, but due to his own genuine intent. When he attempts to confess his true motivations to her, he suddenly faints.
