Yuuichi secretly sees Rika for one minute in the intensive care unit. Depressed, he meets Misako, but Akiko intervenes, beating both of them and forbidding Yuuichi from telling Rika. Dr. Natsume comforts Yuuichi on the hospital roof, sharing his own experience with his dying wife. He notes Rika is earnest about her upcoming operation. Before the procedure, Rika mentions Yuuichi can read Les Thibault. Akiko explains Rika taped a photo of Yuuichi to her leg as a charm. Later, Yuuichi reads the book and realizes its ending mirrors Rika’s confession of love, revealing she risks her life for a chance to be with him.
