Following her surgery, Rika recovers enough to return to the eastern ward, but Yuuichi is barred from visiting. Dr. Natsume warns Yuuichi that he must eventually choose between his future and Rika’s uncertain life, having blinded him with false optimism to spare him the pain he felt when choosing his career over his wife. Yuuichi overhears this confession and resolves to stay with Rika regardless of the consequences. With friends' assistance, he enters her room to promise his eternal support. Meanwhile, Akiko questions whether Dr. Natsume’s personal happiness outweighs Rika’s well-being, arguing that her current joy is preferable to her past state. After the credits, Yuuichi and Rika visit Mount Houdai, where he pledges to cherish her and they share a kiss.
