After an elderly woman is assaulted at a temple in Yonehana-cho, she identifies a suspicious man who flees the scene. Conan and the Detective Boys split up to track him, learning from a waitress that he is Kanieda from Shikabane town. While Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Ayumi follow him, they notice him checking his watch and boarding a train while on his cell phone, raising questions about his earlier phone call. Conan remains distrustful and pursues the suspect to the destination station. There, they encounter Detective Takagi and discover the man’s true identity is Eiichi Usui, not Kanieda, despite the lighter he left behind. The group interviews him to uncover why he cannot reveal his reason for being at the crime scene.
