Ai realizes that revealing their presence to the pursuing hunter would result in him shooting them while claiming they were bears. To ensure Conan can solve the mystery without endangering themselves, Ai and Mitsuhiko leave a trail of different mushroom types as clues. Conan discovers that the culprit is an elderly man who killed a hunter to protect a bear named Jubei. The old man committed this act because the bear had previously saved his life, leading him to eliminate anyone threatening the animal.
