Megure searches for the murder weapon without success but finds a listening device and tampered drawers. The hospital confirms Kaoru will survive. Conan confronts the culprit who attempted to kill Kaoru due to a misunderstanding. The culprit overdoses on medicine in a suicide attempt, but Conan saves her. Kaoru admits she fabricated an engagement rumor to attract her manager's attention. They subsequently become engaged. This episode aired the day before the September 11 attacks.
