Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa visit famous author Osamu Umezu to get his book signed. They meet secretary Mikami Touru, who is worried because Osamu is not answering calls. The group goes to Osamu's apartment and discovers his body. While evidence initially suggests suicide, Kogoro spots blood on a trash bin, indicating murder. The suspects are Osamu's assistant and son, who have keys. Conan puts Kogoro to sleep and impersonates him to solve the case. He reveals that Mikami is the murderer. Mikami used a string on the roof to retrieve the key after locking the door from outside. Conan notes that Osamu died holding his trophy upside down, hiding his book titles and Mikami's name, which are palindromes. A button ripped from Mikami's shirt was stuck to the sofa with gum. Mikami confesses that Osamu had stolen his manuscript and published it as his own work.
