Kogoro, Ran, and Conan pick up Hotta Kosaku, who has car trouble, and attend his birthday party. They meet Hotta Ryoji, Hotta Koichi, Hotta Harumi, groundskeeper Yamauchi Masahiro, and Kosaku’s estranged daughter, Hotta Fumiko. After Kosaku dismisses Fumiko, an argument ensues, and he is killed in his room by a homemade bomb covered in fertilizer. Conan deduces that Masahiro is the killer due to his access to chemicals and engineering skills. Masahiro confesses that Kosaku broke his son Kentaro’s hand, preventing him from playing piano and leading to suicide. Masahiro intended to kill Fumiko via a fake invitation but failed after Conan warned her.
