Ran, Kogoro, and Conan ski in the mountains and meet Dr. Oyama Masashi with students Nakahara Kaori, Kanazawa Tomoyasu, Tobita Ginji, and Ezumi Kaho. A snowstorm forces them to stay at the doctor’s place. Dr. Masashi is murdered while watching TV, confident Kogoro will solve it. Conan deduces an inside job by one of the four students. Two have alibis, leaving two suspects. Conan announces Kaori is the killer based on a dying message she tried to erase but failed to remove because the blood had dried. The message references a shogi piece named Kaori. She confesses that Dr. Masashi stole her father’s thesis statement and claimed it as his own.
