Diving champion Saijo Naoya is found dead after hitting his head on a board, but Conan detects foul play due to mismatched earplugs and chloroform-scented clothes. Suspects include tax-evading Saeki Reiko, rival Naruse Keiichi, and blackmailed Kijima Hisashi. Conan questions an elderly artist who sketches a diver's sparkles despite the darkness. Kogoro is put to sleep as Conan explains Naoya was murdered poolside with a brick. Hisashi killed Naoya by dimming the lights and diving himself, leaving sparkles as evidence since he is the only suspect wearing earrings. Hisashi confesses that Naoya's blackmail motivated the crime.
