Eisuke hires Kogoro to investigate a suspicious reward scheme involving garbage swapping, suspecting a link to the Red-Headed League. Kogoro, accompanied by Ran, Conan, and Eisuke, encounters Takagi, who reports the recent murder of Kaneyo Funemoto, who was shot in the head at home. Her son, Touji Funemoto, claims a strange foreign woman questioned him about a witnessed accident and suspects her of the crime. Conan identifies the woman as Vermouth, realizing the Black Organization now knows that Rena Mizunashi is in a coma at the hospital.
