Takeyori Oikawa hires Kogoro to protect a painting, the final part of a four-piece set, during a live unveiling. Guards secure the secluded room, but a blackout allows the artwork to vanish while Oikawa’s father is killed inside. As police investigate the murder and Kid’s involvement, Oikawa receives a letter from the phantom thief claiming to steal the truth. Suspecting Oikawa of patricide, Conan receives the letter, which Oikawa has deliberately disfigured to frame Kid for the crime. This act of forgery convinces Conan that Oikawa is the true culprit behind his father's death.
