He confessed to seeking revenge after discovering Hiyama orchestrated an accident to force his wife to sell their candy shop land without permission. Near the end, Conan and Subaru reassemble the dying message left by Haneda Koji 17 years ago. They decode the phrase "U MASCARA" to reveal the true meaning "ASACA RUM," solving the long-standing mystery.
