Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian search a forest, encountering Jin Ling who is attacked by Sect Leader Yao. Wei Wuxian attributes the violence to resentful energy causing hallucinations, noting Jin Ling is protected by his Yunmeng bell. The trio discovers dead guards and defeats a snake-like beast. Sect Leader Yao mentions Jiang Yanli, prompting Jin Ling to flee into a corpse-filled area. There, Wei Wuxian suppresses an attacking head, which Lan Wangji identifies as Jin Zixun. Flashbacks reveal Jin Zixun died attempting to remove a curse from Wei Wuxian, whose body vanished after his death, leaving the curse's status unconfirmed. Lan Wangji defends Wei Wuxian’s honor to Jin Ling. Wen Ning appears, causing Jin Ling to chase him. A spy commits suicide to avoid interrogation, and Jin Ling fires a signal flare for assistance.
