Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian attempts to escape the Cloud Recesses but needs a passage token. He sneaks into the Cold Spring to steal one, only to encounter Lan Wangji bathing. Wei Wuxian notices scars on Lan Wangji’s back and a sun-shaped mark on his chest before being caught. Lan Sizhui interrupts to report that a possessed arm has gone out of control. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji use their instruments to suppress it. Lan Sizhui deduces the arm was released near Mo village after their arrival, as earlier release would have caused greater bloodshed. Wei Wuxian finds it suspicious that Mo Xuanyu summoned him right before the arm and Wen Ning appeared. That night, resentful energy disturbances are reported near the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji sends disciples to investigate while he and Wei Wuxian follow the arm’s direction to an abandoned town.

Wei Wuxian attributes the violence to resentful energy causing hallucinations, noting Jin Ling is protected by his Yunmeng bell. The trio discovers dead guards and defeats a snake-like beast. Sect Leader Yao mentions Jiang Yanli, prompting Jin Ling to flee into a corpse-filled area. There, Wei Wuxian suppresses an attacking head, which Lan Wangji identifies as Jin Zixun. Flashbacks reveal Jin Zixun died attempting to remove a curse from Wei Wuxian, whose body vanished after his death, leaving the curse's status unconfirmed. In Qinghe, Wei Wuxian argues with a merchant selling Yiling Patriarch portraits, prompting Jin Ling to kick the seller and summon his dog, Fairy. Wei Wuxian flees to Lan Wangji, frightened by the animal. Jin Ling and Fairy proceed to Xinglu Ridge, while Wei Wuxian recalls being taken in by Jiang Fengmian after hearing the dog bark.

Wei Wuxian recalls his memories of them and promises to find them, which wakes Jin Ling from the nightmare. Wei Wuxian then successfully removes the marks, but Jiang Cheng arrives unexpectedly.

During their conversation, Wei Wuxian reflects on his childhood with Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, apologizing for his actions at Mt. Dafan. After Jin Ling departs, Wen Ning returns, prompting Wei Wuxian to recall protecting the Wen sect remnants and surrendering the Stygian Tiger Seal. Wei Wuxian then examines Wen Ning's memories, uncovering that the Jin Sect and Lan Sect collaborated in previous years.

Trouble erupts at the Burial Mound as Wen Ning goes berserk; they suppress him and restore his mind. Wei Wuxian refuses to abandon the Wen Remnants, parting ways with Lan Wangji. One year later, Jin Zixun ambushes them on Qiongqi Way during travel to Jin Ling's one-month anniversary. Accusing Wei Wuxian of the Hundred Holes curse, Jin Zixun triggers Wei Wuxian's loss of control. The Stygian Tiger Seal causes Wen Ning to kill arriving Jin Zixuan. Post-credits, Wei Wuxian recalls Jiang Chang bringing sister Yangli to Yiling in wedding clothes, where she allowed him to name Jin Ling Rulan.

He then wakes under Lan Wangji's care, who returns his Yunmeng bell and temporary flute, revealing he knew Wei Wuxian's identity since Mt. Dafan. They share a meal, discussing the dream and Lan Wangji's suspicion that another manipulated the seal to frame Wei Wuxian for past deaths.

The duo discovers a cultivator skilled in Gusu sword techniques with scars from the Hundred Holes curse. A zombie hand appears, leading them to find legs matching the arm sewn onto a corpse. They split up, with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji heading West guided by the hand. In town, Lan Wangji asks about Wei Wuxian's death, but Wei Wuxian refuses to answer. Lan Wangji finds a pellet drum, triggering a memory of giving one to young Wei Wuxian before he went to Lotus Pier. In the post-credit scene, Jin Guangyao examines a paper with directions for the Sacrifice Ritual Mo Xuanyu used. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian arrive in Yi City, finding only corpses killed by Shuanghua before meeting Xiao Xingchen.
