Manji and Rin visit Master Sori to recruit him against the Ittou-ryuu. Rin reveals she knows he is a shogunate spy, causing Manji to leave. Rin is attacked by Ittou-ryuu followers, and Manji returns to kill them but gets pinned by tree spikes. Sori wakes when blood hits his face and kills the leader. He later pays Rin for a color for his art. Rin takes Manji's weapons to a blacksmith and sees her father's sword. The owner, Magatsu, offers to sell it if she reveals the Asano dojo daughter's location. Suspecting Rin, Magatsu fights Manji that night. Both are severely injured, but Manji retrieves the sword.
