Ep. 5: Manji and Rin face Eiku Shizuma, who traps Rin to lure Manji into a deadly confrontation.

Manji and Rin rest at an inn where Manji meets Eiku Shizuma, who offers help finding Anotsu. After Manji refuses, Shizuma attacks, and they fatally wound each other. Shizuma, also immortal, departs, but Manji suffers as poison from Shizuma’s dagger kills his bloodworms. Rin administers Asano family antitoxin and leaves for a doctor, encountering an old woman disguised as Yaobikuni. This is a trap by Shizuma to kidnap Rin and draw out Manji. Shizuma reveals he became immortal two hundred years ago during the Sengoku period but lost everything. He offers Rin his blood to grant immortality, but Manji, partially recovered, interrupts. Rin creates a distraction, allowing Manji to impale Shizuma with his own poisoned sword, ending his life. Shizuma’s final words reveal Anotsu is heading to Kaga. Rin questions if immortality only prolongs the pain of unfulfilled goals.
