Years prior to the Fourth Great Ninja War, a young Naruto paints village houses and flees complaints. When Hiruzen visits to provide his allowance, Naruto asks about his parents, but the Third Hokage declines to answer. Later in the Academy, Naruto meets Sasuke Uchiha and loses repeatedly to him, noticing hatred in his eyes. He subsequently discovers Sasuke is the sole survivor of the Uchiha Clan Massacre. After graduating, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura Haruno form a team under Kakashi Hatake and pass his bell test. On their mission to the Land of Waves, they are attacked, and Naruto injures himself. He pierces his own hand to remove venom, vowing never to require saving again.
