Asuma collapses from mortal wounds as Ino, Choji, Aoba, and Raido arrive as backup. Hidan and Kakuzu defeat the reinforcements but are ordered by their leader to retreat and seal the Two-Tails. They warn the group they will return. Ino attempts to heal Asuma with medical jutsu but fails because his vital organs are destroyed. Before dying, Asuma gives advice to his students and whispers the identity of the king Konoha must protect. He smokes one last cigarette and passes away. This event occurs during the Akatsuki Suppression Mission arc, specifically episode 9 of 17.
