He is troubled by a recent argument between his daughter Etsuko and her grandfather regarding chopstick usage, which Etsuko considers barbaric. Kurita and Yamaoka offer to speak with her, but Kaibara interrupts, criticizing Yamaoka’s knowledge of Japanese dining etiquette. Yamaoka takes Etsuko to a teak chopstick factory to demonstrate the craft, followed by a meal at an exclusive Kyoto ryotei using cedar chopsticks. Kaibara attends as a guest and insults Yamaoka for wetting the chopstick ends, claiming this reflects poor manners despite their enjoyment of the food.
