Okita presents humorous haiku to Tetsu to lift his spirits, unaware the poem actually belongs to Hijikata, who demands its return. Ryoma challenges Hijikata to a footrace to stop the pursuit. Tetsu shows the poem to Sanosuke and Shinpachi, causing Hijikata to chase them until he trips on a vegetable. Exhausted from the tailing, Tetsu attempts to return the haiku to Okita, who instructs him to keep it. Tetsu runs toward Tatsu as Hijikata approaches, but Tatsu hands over the poem without hesitation. Tatsu thanks Okita for the lesson, revealing that the returned haiku was a fake created by Okita, despite Hijikata’s serious demeanor.
