Tetsu informs Susumu that Ayumu is in danger, noting that Susumu remains indifferent toward her despite Ayumu’s request for him to care for her younger brother. Susumu arrives too late to find Ayumu beaten and dead on the ground. The Shinsengumi mourns the loss, with a regretful Hijikata ordering a swift and discreet funeral. Later, Tetsu joins Susumu on a rooftop at night, expressing guilt over failing to finish the last meal Ayumu prepared for him. Susumu then reveals that Ayumu had taken his place as a watcher to protect him from death. The following morning, Tetsu makes a promise to become friends with Susumu from that point forward.
