While wandering Viridian Forest, Ash and Misty encounter a boy calling himself Samurai. After a battle where Ash’s Metapod defends against Samurai’s Pinsir, a Beedrill swarm attacks. Ash flees but leaves Metapod behind, which is taken to the hive. Ash attempts a rescue, but Team Rocket arrives to cause trouble. The Beedrill redirect their anger toward Jessie, James, and Meowth. Metapod remains upset with Ash for abandoning it. The episode questions whether Ash has learned to value his friends, if Metapod will evolve, and if the battle with Samurai will resume.
