Ash secures his first capture with a Caterpie, much to Misty’s disgust. While sleeping, Caterpie tells Pikachu of its desire to evolve. Ash later catches a Pidgeotto, though Misty attributes this to luck. Team Rocket arrives to steal Pikachu, recognizing its unique value. After Pikachu and Pidgeotto are weakened by Koffing and Ekans, Ash reluctantly deploys Caterpie. Surprisingly, Caterpie’s String Shot defeats the Team Rocket members and their Pokemon, including Meowth. As Misty attempts to befriend the Bug-type, it evolves into a Metapod, leaving its future transformation into a Butterfree uncertain.
