Sara finds herself overwhelmed by her new environment despite her efforts to adapt. Becky attempts to assist, yet her high social standing still shocks Ermengarde and Lottie. Meanwhile, Lavinia directs Jessie and Gertrude to harass Sara, creating an intimidating atmosphere that unsettles the other students. Later that evening, the relentless cruelty of Lavinia and her group forces Ermengarde to flee to the attic. After finishing her studies late at night, Sara discovers Ermengarde waiting there. The two engage in conversation before Ermengarde must sneak back to her room, carefully avoiding detection by the sleeping Headmistress.
