Ronja and Birk narrowly escape a river current heading toward a waterfall, with Birk rescuing Ronja before they rest. Upon returning to the cave, they encounter Lovis, whom Birk ignores, prompting Ronja to scold his rudeness. Ronja declares she will not return to the fort, but Lovis reveals that Mattis is distraught, crying and calling for Ronja in his sleep. Ronja insists she will only come back if Mattis asks her to return personally. The next morning, Birk admits he acts like her brother only in private due to fear of her leaving. He decides to focus on their present summer together, yet Ronja promises to stay regardless of the season as winter approaches.
