Facing an imminent Imperial invasion, residents of Bruhl evacuate with help from the Townwatch. Alicia, a Townwatch member, arrests Welkin Gunther for suspected espionage despite his claims of innocence. Welkin escapes, prompting Alicia to pursue him as she remains convinced he is a spy. Both are spotted and shot at by Imperial scouts during the chase. They retreat to the safety of the Gunther estate in the Bruhl countryside, where they reunite with Welkin’s Darcsen foster-sister, Isara. Imperial troops and tanks soon arrive and surround the estate, trapping them inside.
