Welkin, Isara, and Alicia flee to Bruhl in the prototype tank Edelweiss, built by Isara’s father, a Darcsen engineer. Imperial troops pursue them closely. The Bruhl Townwatch delays the enemy to allow civilian evacuation, but their inexperience and poor equipment lead to heavy losses. Inside the Edelweiss, Welkin and Isara fight Imperial forces to buy time for the remaining guards to escape. The Gallian Regular Army arrives at Bruhl’s outskirts but refuses to retake the town from the stronger Imperial force. Following the town’s capture, Alicia and her friend Susie Evans join the Gallian Militia. Alicia is later surprised to discover that Welkin has also enlisted in the militia.
