Emilico and Mia reunite with their squad, relieved by Mia’s recovery. Dolls serve as their Shadow master’s public face, a role critical for Rosemary and Mia’s debut. An alarm signals a Phantom, a harmful soot creature, which swallows Rosemary’s head. Emilico destroys it using water from a flower pot, but Rosemary suffers soot sickness, losing speech and mobility. Emilico learns Mia is literate and bears scars, unlike herself. Later, Kate discovers she can manipulate objects telekinetically using her emitted soot. She shares this secret with Emilico, noting that Shadow lore contains no record of such an ability.
