In the quiet town of Sotoba, hospital dean Toshio Ozaki and priest Seishin Muroi investigate bizarre elderly deaths. A moving company brings the Kirishiki family to an abandoned castle at night. High school student Megumi Shimizu, who stalks classmate Natsuno Yuuki, visits the castle and vanishes. Townspeople find her catatonic in the woods. Toshio diagnoses her with anemia from insect bites, but Megumi dies days later, shocking her family and friends.
