Sonic and his companions encounter a Metarex army commanded by Dark Oak, who had been waiting for them. The group becomes surrounded by forces that have encircled the fortress, revealing the situation to be a trap. Sonic tries to flee, but because all the Chaos Emeralds are gathered in one location, he and Shadow are forced into a direct confrontation.
